After many years service our very own Gordon Brown has retired from the Barbarians committee. During his time with the Barbarians he was Honorary Treasurer for 10 years and Honorary Secretary for 5 years. He incorporated the club and set up its charity, the Barbarians Rugby Charitable Trust, which since its establishment has donated over £250,000 to rugby-related and other causes.

When Clarty stepped down as Chairman of Rugby at the end of last season, we undertook a collection by way of testimonial for his remarkable services to the club. A silver salver was commissioned to recognise 35 years as Chairman of Rugby and a sum of money raised to send him and Christine on a well-deserved holiday. This was just before his serious accident in May, from which he is now recovering.

Two of Wharfedale’s longest-serving members have been honoured at the Yorkshire Rugby Awards Dinner.

Chris Baker received the Club Volunteer Award for his services to the club over many decades as player, Chairman, car park attendant, scoreboard operator and anything else that needed doing.

The top honour, the President’s Award, went to Michael Harrison, player, coach, Director of Rugby and synonym for Wharfedale since his schooldays, when as an Ermysted’s pupil he captained the England Schools side.
