With Ilkley being at the top of the league, this local derby game was given added incentive for both teams to put up a strong performance. The early exchanges indicated exactly that, with both sides probing for an opening. Wharfedale had the majority of the possession and twice crossed the line, but were unable to ground the ball. The Greens eventually opened the scoring with a penalty goal after 25 minutes. The two well-matched sides kept up the intensity and equalled each other out in both attack and defence. In the last minute of the half Ilkley deservedly levelled the scores with a penalty.
There was similar intensity from both sides at the start of the second half. The Greens had a slight edge and Josh Lloyd scored a converted try after ten minutes. Ilkley matched this almost immediately with a try from a smartly taken penalty. The opposition now had the momentum and applied further pressure, resulting in another try in the last play of the game. Jonathan Davies’ three penalties and a conversion were crucial.
Such a competitive game was much enjoyed by those privileged to watch it. Both sides could be proud of their efforts. To have three of our teams playing these days is a real treat. Many thanks to Ilkley for coming.
