Bill Sweeney, Chief Executive of the RFU, made an impromptu visit to the club on Thursday morning. He was on holiday visiting friends in the Dales and wanted to take the opportunity to meet a local club, so arranged with John Lawn to visit Wharfedale to hear our thoughts on a range of issues facing the game.
Bill spent a couple of hours with a small group comprising Robert Fort, John Lawn, David Baker, John Spencer and Jon Feeley. A wide-ranging discussion took in our views on governance (national, county and club) club finances, competition structure, player remuneration, welfare and pathways and, of course, the impact of Covid-19 and the prospects for a return to rugby. On this latter point, Bill informed us that the RFU are working with DCMS to get us to Stage D on the roadmap as soon as possible and that he is hopeful of a return to community rugby in November.
The RFU expect to make a further announcement on Tuesday 1 September.
