Old Brodleians 2’s 5 Wharfedale Foresters 64

Following on from last weekends victory at Sandal, the Foresters squad travelled to Hipperholme to take on Old Brodleians, instead of the league fixture at home to Scunthorpe due to a Covid outbreak….

Another testing week for management with unavailability and late call ups to the 1st team squad, we were once again forced into uncontested scrums, and a late injury in the warm up to Duncan Clayton-Stead forced Sam Arkwright to step into the unfamiliar territory of second row!

The squad were in good spirits despite a third away game on the trot, playing across the road down the substantial slope in the 1st half and in front of a good number of familiar faces the Foresters attacked from the outset

Four tries were scored in this half Owen Bullock, Fred Hewetson, Oscar Canny and Jack Burton getting across the whitewash, the pick of these being Hewetson’s score which followed good work by Josh Prell and Arkwright the later being tackled just short of the line and quick play of the ball to make the score, three conversions to Luke Punton gave the foresters a 26-0 half time lead.

Up the slope in the second half the Foresters were contemplating playing a tighter style of rugby but this wasn’t to be with another 6 scores being added with some fluid running and hands by the talented backs. Two of the scores were started on their own 5yd line with clean breaks by Canny, Bullock to create a score for Ethan Spencer and then again by Josh Prell for Punton to score from 50yds.

The fowards assisted in the good work with a solid defensive effort led by Fawcett and Smith.

The loss of Arkwright with concussion led to the Foresters finishing with 14 men on the park.

Tries were scored at regular intervals with Bullock completing a hatrick a second for Canny and finally the strong running Prell crossing again. Punton converted another three.

Brodleians never gave up and were rewarded with a consolation try late on.

All in all a good day at the office in the run up to October’s testing fixtures.
