We wish all our members and supporters a Happy New Year – although it is difficult to find anything to celebrate in the current circumstances.
Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Monday evening, community rugby is back at Stage A on the RFU roadmap which means that all training activity for seniors and mini/juniors is now suspended indefinitely.
Much as we would like to be able to continue with rugby activities given the extensive investment in secure protocols, this is simply not permitted and we are all required to stay at home as much as possible. With the latest lockdown expected to last until mid-late February at the earliest, the prospects of any meaningful rugby this season are fast receding. The clubhouse and gym are now closed.
We have offered the the clubhouse to the Bradford and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group and the Ilkley Moor/Grassington medical practice free of charge for use as a local vaccination centre for Wharfedale. Much will depend on the ability of the NHS to roll out vaccine supply and delivery capability but the offer has been well-received and we stand ready to make the clubhouse available should this be appropriate.
We now need to hold strong, focus on the return to rugby – whenever that may be – and look forward to the day when we can all be back at the Avenue doing what we do best – supporting all our teams and players on the field.
Vis ex montibus venit!
Chairman, Wharfedale RUFC
