It is with regret that we have to report that Jim Holmfield, one of our Life Members, died on 30 June.
Jim was one of the many hardworking servants that the club is fortunate to have had. He wrote match reports back in the 1975/78 Seasons for the second XV, and also served on the selection committee. He will however be remembered most of all for his phenomenal work as Team Secretary for some 30 years from 1978 until 2008. Each week, he would ring every player in all 4 teams (and occasionally 5) to tell them in which side they had been selected, and where and when they should be on a Saturday afternoon. All done by phone, with no modern communications systems to hand. He never took happily to those who did not answer his call to arms – and woe betide any player who thought to give backword. As our chairman can testify, he was equally strict with referees. An outstanding club servant who will be missed by all who knew him.
In the summer months, Jim spent many happy hours as an umpire in the local cricket leagues where he will be remembered just as fondly.
May he rest in peace.
