This Saturday sees the Green Machine on the road again, heading east to take on Hull Ionians. Back in November Wharfedale won away to Ionians’ city neighbours, Hull. But a trip to Brantingham Park may present a tougher challenge. Ionians lie fourth in National 2 North, and last week recorded their most impressive result of the season, soundly beating second-placed Macclesfield.
Still, there are good reasons for Wharfedale to travel in hope. At The Avenue last October a makeshift Dale side came within a score of drawing with Ionians. And in recent weeks key figures have returned to strengthen the Greens, which last weekend pushed third-placed Mowden Park all the way.
Long-standing Wharfedale supporters will recall that ten seasons ago the Greens travelled to Ionians and, against the odds, were victorious. With this memory, and the lure of a sunny forecast for Hull on Saturday, the Green support can travel with hope. And remember, our river runs close by. Kick-off is at 2pm, and the postcode for Brantingham Park is HU15 1HX.
