Sunday 8 March - Wharfedale Ladies v Rochdale Ladies (H) KO 2.00pm ....

West Park Leeds Ladies 31-7 Wharfedale Ladies

Wharfedale Ladies headed into Sunday’s fixture with positivity and confidence following two consecutive wins. However, facing the league leaders, West Park Leeds 2nd, on their home turf proved to be as much a mental battle as a physical one.

The weight of expectation and a touch of pre-match nerves seemed to hamper the visitors early on. A few uncharacteristic errors in the opening minutes handed WPL the momentum, allowing the hosts to cross the line and take an early lead that Wharfedale would spend the rest of the afternoon chasing.

Despite the scoreline, there were significant positives to take away. Wharfedale was strong in the set piece, with the scrum holding firm and the line-out functioning with precision. When the Ladies got the ball, their passing and offloading game looked promising, moving the ball with intent.

However, WPL maintained the edge through sheer consistency. While Wharfedale showed a willingness to fly into tackles, a lack of consistent defensive structure and some lack of urgency in open play allowed the league leaders to exploit gaps.

Rugby is often measured by fine margins, and on this occasion, it didn’t go Wharfedale’s way. With the referee officiating his third match of the day, fatigue inevitably played a role in the decision making.

Two moments stood out.

A disallowed try for Wharfedale that could have swung the momentum.

A missed deliberate knock-on by WPL that went unpunished.

Had these calls gone the other way, the game might have looked different, potentially narrowing the 31-7 gap.

With three league games remaining, the aim is to secure a top-half finish. The Ladies have shown they have the technical ability to compete with the best, and the focus now shifts to maintaining that intensity for the full game.

Wharfedale Ladies travel away again for their next game. Clitheroe Ladies on 22nd February at Clitheroe RUFC.

As always, support is greatly appreciated and we hope to see as many of you there to cheer the team on!
