Battle in the Rain: Wharfedale Ladies Show Grit in Narrow Defeat to Rochdale
Sixteen resilient players of the Wharfedale Ladies squad braved a sodden Sunday journey over the border to face Rochdale RUFC, an unfamiliar opponent, in a match that promised high energy and delivered intense action.
The home side, Rochdale, asserted early dominance, immediately putting the Wharfedale defence under immense pressure. Wave after wave of attacking phases, showcasing well-drilled training ground moves from the Rochdale backs, battered the Wharfedale line. However, the Dale Ladies held firm. Their tenacious defensive effort proved impenetrable, weathering the storm.
As the half progressed, the tide turned. Wharfedale secured extensive possession and began to dictate the play, forcing Rochdale onto the back foot. The match settled into a tense, tight contest, with neither side able to convert pressure into points. The whistle blew on a deadlock, with the half-time score remaining 0-0.
Wharfedale Ladies exploded out of the blocks in the second forty, immediately seizing the initiative. Their efforts were swiftly rewarded just minutes into the half. After sustained teamwork, it was the rapid Number 15, Maddy Greig, who crossed the whitewash to claim a well-deserved opening try for the visitors.
Rochdale, stung by the scoreline, rallied strongly. They hit back with impressive force, crossing the line three times in the subsequent half-hour, opening up a lead.
Despite the deficit, Wharfedale’s resilience shone through. The game remained close on the pitch, and the Ladies refused to give up, striking back with two late tries in the final ten minutes.
The first came from a moment of individual brilliance by Number 10, Jessie Allen. A clever kick downfield was followed by a relentless chase, and Allen skillfully nudged the ball over the line for a crucial score. The second followed quickly after another Rochdale try. Powerful forward carries, spearheaded by Props Lizzy Dennison and Michelle Rollason, saw them pick-and-go their way up the field, setting the platform for Number 6, Charlotte Charnley, to power over for the final try of the game.
The final whistle confirmed a hard-fought victory for the home side, Rochdale Ladies 24 – 15 Wharfedale Ladies.
Under difficult conditions, the Wharfedale Ladies showed tremendous spirit and resolve. The narrow defeat sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting and hotly contested return fixture. The two teams will meet again at The Avenue on Sunday, March 8th, 2026.
