Family Ties and Fierce Defence: Wharfedale Ladies Make League Debut

Wharfedale Ladies kicked off their league season with an exciting, tough encounter on the road, taking on Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC in their first official league fixture. Although the result ended in a 22-5 loss for the Daleswomen, the performance was a testament to the potential of this developing squad.

The match was particularly special for tighthead prop Lizzy Dennison, who played her first game in the famous green shirt of Wharfedale RUFC, a venue steeped in her own family history—the very club her grandfather, Ossie Jacques helped found. Dennison’s appearance was a remarkable story of dedication; having retired from the sport six and a half years ago, she made a phenomenal comeback just three months after giving birth to her third child. Her return is a massive boost for the team, bringing invaluable experience and strength to the front row.

The game itself was a highly defensive affair against a well-structured and experienced Huddersfield Laund Hill side. Wharfedale fought bravely throughout, with a committed performance across the park. Their sole score came from captain for the day and number 8, Charlotte Charnley, who crossed the line for the team’s only try in the 39th minute.

Despite the loss, the match marks a positive start to the season for a new and relatively inexperienced team that is clearly still developing and looking to grow its numbers. The spirit and tenacity shown against a strong opponent promise great things for the future.

The Ladies will be looking to build on this solid start when they play their next fixture at home at The Avenue on Sunday, October 19th. They face West Park Leeds 2nds.

Come down and support the team as they look to secure their first victory of the season!

The Ladies train every Monday 7.00 – 8:30pm at the club. New and experienced players are all welcome.
