Yorkshire Cup Quarter Final
This was a truly monumental effort by the Foresters. In the first half they outplayed the opposition and went in at half time leading by 24 points to 8. They tackled like demons and forced mistakes and when they had the ball they attacked like a pack of leopards, swift and clinical. In that opening 40 minutes, despite being a much lighter 8, they had the upper hand in the scrum as well. The first scrum was a Hull put in and the Dale pack drove them back at speed and won a penalty.
It did not last however and Hull used the ball more effectively in the second half and stretched the Dale defence on numerous occasions utilising the speed of the back three. In the first half Hull had been rather selfish and time after time a player tried to go on his own or step inside only to meet the solid wall of the Green Machine.
Andrew Rhodes opened the scoring with a penalty before he set up Will Davidson to score under the posts. Rhodes added the extras to give Dale a 0-10 lead. Lee Birch then answered for Hull with a penalty and a try. Tom Whyte then pounced on a ball in midfield and took the ball deep into the opponents 22. Good follow up work led to a try for Elliott Ward, Rhodes was again accurate from the tee. Dale scored again before half time when Robbie Davidson was put over in the corner. A superb conversion left Hull wondering what had happened.
The home side finished the first half by going through 23 phases before making an error.
Hull went on to score 5 tries in the second half and with a couple of penalties they reached 50 points. The Foresters never gave up and still managed a score in the second half from a great catch and drive and a try awarded to Chris Swainson.
Wharfedale Head Coach, James Doherty, commented after the match that “this was an absolutely outstanding performance from our second team competing with a highly placed 1st team. The lads thoroughly deserved the half time lead. The attitude throughout the team was excellent and the amount of effort put in by all players unbelievable. This match has shown that there is real strength in depth at Wharfedale.”
Hull now go on to play Harrogate in the semi-final.
