Sheffield Tigers 2nd XV 5-21 Foresters

The Foresters and their hardy supporters travelled down the M1 to take on the second placed side Sheffield Tigers at their Dore Moor ground on the windswept fells above the Steel City. With a quartet of returning injured 1st team squad players the Foresters were hoping for a tough encounter and this is what ensued over the following 80 minutes.

From the outset it was a nip and tuck affair with both sides testing each other’s defences out and it wasn’t until Will Lawn broke from a midfield ruck 25yds out that the scoreboard was troubled, in under the sticks and duly converted by his half back partner MacNab. (7-0).

A similar break from the side of a ruck following good work by the forward pack resulted in a second try for Lawn and conversion by MacNab. (14-0).

Following a brief period of stalemate winger Josh Prell made a line break and fed centre Ben Parkinson who ran in unopposed under the sticks, again converted by MacNab. (21-0).

Back came the Tigers following some strong words by the coach and pressure told as they scored wide out to the left, conversion missed. (21-5).

25 minutes played and both sides defences nullified any scoring opportunities to round out the half.

Changes were made at halftime by the management hoping to bring the game to life in the second period. But it was both sides defences that shone with scoring chances few and far between with the foresters searching for the bonus point try and Tigers looking to get a foot hold in the game.

This was until the last few minutes when Joe Metcalfe crossed the whitewash but was deemed to have knocked on in the act of scoring. Full time 21-5 and the tough encounter required was over.

All credit to both squads for playing a full blooded fixture where defences were to the fore and to the hardy group of traveling greens supporters who braved the South Yorkshire elements.

The squad and management were pleased with the outcome and a sociable trip was made back north.

Foresters Finest – tough to choose a man of the match but Will Lawn just shaded this with his brace of tries.
