Development XV 55-17 Selby 2nd XV

A dry afternoon but only after a fair amount of rain overnight caused rather muddy conditions to welcome Selby to the avenue. The hosts had a couple of changes from the previous week, the most notable being 5 props in the squad and centre James Tincknell was making a welcome return from injury and his first appearance of the season in a green shirt.

It was the returning centre who got on the score board first with a try after supporting an excellent break by Jonny Davies at fly half. Davies burst through the Selby defence just inside their half and powered through a couple more defenders on a very determined run only to be thwarted just short of the whitewash but managed to offload to Tincknell for the simplest of touchdowns. The veteran fly half, ever consistent, added the extras for the home side to lead 7-0.

A bit of scrappy, loose play then followed but Tincknell cleaned up the loose ball and turned to set up the attack, fixed the defender and released Sam Smith for a clear run to the line. JD with the extras, 14-0. This was followed by another 2 on 1 to put Smith in the clear once more, with a little more to do he beat the last defender to bluster over for his second. JD converted and we were 21-0 up.

Selby then came on the attack. A good kick through was well cleaned up by Sam Mason at fullback, but a 5m scrum to the visitors was the result. From the scrum platform, Selby attacked to the right and scored a try in the corner. The conversion was missed but they were on the scoreboard and back in the game. 21-5.

Wharfedale responded well and chose to make use of the driven maul in the muddy conditions. This proved to be fruitful as hooker Tom Carlisle claimed the try to extend the lead to 26-5. Then an attacking kick was well chased by winger Owain Chapman, whose pressure caused the Selby man to make a mistake and pass the ball direct into touch to give away a penalty. It was taken quickly. Prop Thomas Walker came close, but experience showed as Neil Dickinson was on hand to crash over. JD uncharacteristically missed two conversions in succession but the score was 31-5.

Soon after the kick off for the second half, Dan Benson had his hands on the ball and was bullocking his way through the Selby defenders. They failed to stop the second row and he crossed over for a try near the posts. JD was back on target, 38-5.

Selby then had a good attacking phase and carried well into the heart of the green defence. After several good carries and strong yards made, a cross field kick found their winger who beat the last man to score a second for the visistors. 38-10.

Chapman then gathered up a loose ball just inside the Selby half near the touchline. The winger then neatly stepped inside the two cover defenders and had the legs for a clear run in to the line to cross under the posts. JD again converted, 45-10.

Selby then added their 3rd try of the afternoon and managed the conversion to take the score to 45-17, but then the hosts rounded off the afternoon with two more tries. Firstly Benson crashed over for his second the scrum half Dave Hickling snook over from close range. Benson now with the kicking tee after JD had a rest, was more round bale than Gareth Bale as both conversion chances were bombed. Final score Wharfedale Development XV 55-17 Selby 2nd XV.
