Rowntrees stunned Wharfedale into action as from the first scrum they scooped the ball up and a deft pass to their stand-off cut a direct line through Wharfedale’s defence to score near the posts, 7-0 down with the conversion. After 5 minutes, Wharfedale regrouped and began their usual no nonsense workmanlike game plan. Jonathan Davies kicked a penalty to open their account followed by a strong run and lunge for the try line from Sam Bradley.
Now with their noses in front, Wharfedale began to take control of the game. The scrum was now pushing Rowntrees back at each set piece. Jim Bowers scored the next try after a good spell of forward pressure with Davieson converting. Rowntrees came back with a penalty kick to end the half 15-10.
In the second half, now playing down the slope, Wharfedale’s confidence rose and soon had a five meter scrum, which was driven over at great speed for Jim Bowers 2nd try.
Wharfedale continued to pressurise Rowntrees but their defence was putting up a good display denying Wharfedale to be fully fluent. Eventually Wharfedale got the decisive score, a try under the posts by Frazer Lovatt, converted by Andy Rhodes.
Rowntrees kept up the defence and had the last say on the score board with a try with 7 minutes remaining, but Wharfedale kept their cool and worked back into Rowntrees 22 to seal the game.
It had been a good sporting encounter by both sides.
