Driffield 2’s 13 Wharfedale Foresters 27

The Foresters made the journey across to the flatlands to take on a confident Driffield second string in a fixture that would act as the results of both the snow postponed home fixture from three weeks ago and this return fixture.

After playing only three matches so far in 2022, neither commitment nor selection has been easy, but nevertheless the management put out their strongest squad in a very long while.

The start was nip and tuck with both sides testing each other to the maximum.  It wasn’t until Omari Kaup-Samuels broke the deadlock when sniping through from a ruck, with Marcus Farnworth converting, that the Greens began to assert.  Five minutes later, the impressive Jack Thompson rumbled over following a well-drilled line out, but this try was not converted.

Driffield came back into the game and put considerable pressure on the Foresters defence and some cheap penalties were conceded, helping their forward momentum.  The second penalty in quick succession for reckless tackling resulted in Max Mountain being sent to the sidelines.  Driffield kicked the resultant penalty.

Mountain’s absence seemed to galvanise our squad, so they came back with Kaup-Samuel’s second try after good carries by Beau Verity and Jack Hirst.  After this, there was a period of stalemate up to half time when the score was 17-3.

Another period of stalemate at the start of the second half was relieved by a try wide out by Owen Bullock, converted expertly from the touch line by Verity.  This try followed excellent work by the whole team with particularly good carries by Thompson, Smith and Hirst.

Driffield were not to be denied, scoring two unconverted tries against our 14 man defence.  With five minutes left, Driffield conceded a penalty in front of the posts, enabling Verity to kick the three points.

The whole team had given their all throughout against strong opposition, with No 8 Thompson getting the man of the match award following his tireless work in defence, combined with strong ball carrying.
