Clifford Read

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the recent passing of former player, Clifford Read. Clifford had the notable accolade of captaining the Colts side, which played against the 1st XV in 1964, at the official opening of the Coulthurst Memorial Ground pitches on the Avenue.

As a member of the backrow, he played for the Upper Wharfedale 1st XV during the mid-late 1960’s, regularly lining up alongside his brother Dennis, and other notably names, R Slater, J Hartley, J and M Harrison, J Spencer, D Rymer, R Cryer et al. As an active participant both on and off the pitch, Clifford was part of the post-match ‘choir’ in the local hostelries, before the days of a club house.

On moving to Cumbria, he became Clerk of Works at Sellafield, and continuing his participation in rugby, he became activity involved with the youth sides at Aspatria RUFC, where he would go onto mentor and have a significant influence on David Pear’s rugby career. In later life he returned to this area, residing in Addingham. The club sends its sincere condolences to Clifford’s family and friends.
