Rugby Pitches Re-surfaced with the Help of Tarmac Ltd

May 20th, 2016 Comments off

It’s been a tough year at Wharfedale Rugby Club both ‘on the field’ and also on the fields. Not only have results led to First Team relegation for the first time in 20 years but also the pitches themselves have taken a battering from the seemingly endless rainfall over the winter months. Thankfully one of the long standing sponsors of the Club is local company, Tarmac Ltd, who operate quarries at various locations in the Dales, including Swinden Quarry just a couple of miles from the rugby ground. Desperately in need of help with pitch revitalisation, head groundsman, Roger Toseland put 120 tons of specialist topsoil at the top of the Club’s ‘wish list’ and Tarmac delivered.

“We are extremely grateful to Tarmac Ltd and their hauliers, Eddie B Webster & Sons of Cracoe, for generously donating and delivering the topsoil without which we would have struggled to maintain the turf” said Club Secretary, Howard Whiteley.

Retirement of Head Groundsman Roger Toseland

May 20th, 2016 Comments off

Our Head Groundsman Roger Toseland has retired from his duties at the club after 26 years in the post as well as previously having held the position of Membership Secretary.

following the ravages of the recent exceptionally wet winter.

It has been a tough year at Wharfedale Rugby Club both on and off the field. Not only have results led to First Team relegation for the first time in 20 years but also the pitches themselves have taken a battering from the seemingly endless rainfall over the winter months. Due in no small measure to Roger’s efforts not a single first team match had to be cancelled due to the weather.

Hon Sec, Howard, on behalf of the Club, said “Wharfedale is known as one of the prettiest rugby grounds in the English leagues and Roger can take enormous credit for his part in maintaining the high standards so admired by visiting spectators. We wish him well in his retirement but we have a sneaking suspicion that he will be keeping a watchful eye on his hallowed turf for a few years to come.”
