Two New Signings

October 7th, 2018 Comments off

We are delighted to bring supporters up to date with two exciting signings since the start of the season.

Will Edwards (above) made his debut at centre in the pre-season friendly with Rotherham Titans and registered with the club just in time for our first league match at Peterborough Lions, where he started at 10 and kicked two conversions in the 26-12 win. Further good performances at home to Sedgley Park and in the defeat at Hull Ionians after missing two games with injury mark Will out as a player of great promise. Originally in the junior ranks at Selby RUFC, Will is currently studying at Durham University where he is a close friend of Will Lawn.

Jack Blakeney-Edwards (above) is a 10/12 who joined the club in early October and kicked 14 points in an assured debut against Preston Grasshoppers. Originally from London, Jack moved to Kendal as a youngster and played in the juniors at Kirkby Lonsdale before earning a rugby scholarship to Durham School and being picked up for the Newcastle Falcons Academy. As a student in Leeds, he played for Otley and then signed for Darlington Mowden Park where, despite limited 1st XV opportunities, he was selected for the Yorkshire County squad in 2018 and greatly impressed our coaching duo of Jon Feeley and Jon Skurr. Jack spent the summer playing for Sydney club Gordon Highlanders in the New South Wales Shute Shield and, on his return, played a couple of games for Kendal before deciding to commit to Wharfedale.

Schools Rugby Festival

September 30th, 2018 Comments off

Last week, Wharfedale RUFC was the venue for a feast of rugby as nearly 200 children aged 8-11 attended the Sedbergh Preparatory School Festival. The connection between Sedbergh and the Wharfedale club has long been in existence. James Doherty, currently on the staff at Sedbergh, is a former captain and coach at Wharfedale. The present headmaster of the main school at Sedbergh is Daniel Harrison, another ex-Wharfedale captain.

However, the day was all about the younger generation. Boys from Mowden Hall, Aysgarth, St Mary’s Hall, Cundall Manor as well as the ‘home team’ enjoyed a great afternoon of rugby. Every school brought with them large squads, and with eleven hours of rugby played over the pitches, everyone gained meaningful time on the pitch and developed friendships off it. The referees managed the games in the true spirit of schoolboy rugby, encouraging positive play. The parents applauded good play and effort from all, regardless of the colour of their jersey, and the atmosphere reflected this.

Doherty was thrilled with success of the event. “The smiles on the faces of the kids say it all. Festivals like this allow for children to experience multiple competitive fixtures against a range from across the North of England. Whilst competitive, the days’ focus was development of schools.”

Both Sedbergh Preparatory School and Wharfedale count the event a great success, and hope that their fruitful relationship will continue.
