Foresters 43 Otley Saracens 19

June 6th, 2015
Those who watch the Foresters’ matches at the Avenue have become used to outrageous entertainment: lots of raw skill, discipline, mistakes, a blending of craggy experience and raw youth, long-distance tries and above all victory.  Saturday’s match against an Otley side unrecognisable from the motley collection which wore the black-and white the last time they came had all of that, with the visitors contributing in no small measure to a fine afternoon’s entertainment.  Even if many in the satisfactory crowd had their minds and mobile phones tuned to events at St Albans, they will surely have been impressed by the magnificent display of forward domination which enabled number 8 Chris Howick to vent his frustration at spending much of the season so far on the First XV bench by turning in a match-winning performance, rounded off by his two second-half tries.  It took the home side only 11 minutes to build a 19-0, lead, with tries from Harry Bullough, Will Bell and the precocious Josh Prell, the latter two tries converted by the returning Scott Jordan, who was shortly to leave the field with  a worrying recurrence of his shoulder injury. Otley now plugged the gaps and enjoyed their spell of the match, responding with a fine try on the half-hour, to make the half-time score 19-7. One minute into the second half, Dan Solomi, another seeking match-fitness after injury, scored his inevitable try; by the 60-minute mark Howick had added his two tries, but Otley had also come back with an excellent try from their own 22 following a turnover. Prop Johnny Rhodes darted over from a lineout to complete the home scoring in the 66th minute, but Otley were not finished and with the last move of the match their young fly-half mesmerised the home defence to score a fine individual try. Foresters: Josh Prell; Scott Jordan, Simon Crabtree, Harry Bullough. Russ Aldersley; Will Bell, Jimmy Bullough; Neil Dickinson, Dan Stockdale, Johnny Rhodes, Rob Burnett, Rhys Davies, Dan Solomi, Tom Whyte, Chris Howick. Replacements: Tom Baines, Pierce Phillips, George Altham, Harry Croft. Tries: Howick (2), Bullough H, Bell, Prell, Rhodes. Conversions: Jordan (2), Bell (2) The Foresters take a break from Yorkshire Premier rugby on Saturday when they welcome Blaydon second string in the regular double header.
