Tynedale Raiders 12-25 Foresters

April 27th, 2018

Following on from a tough week of selection issues the Foresters travelled up to Corbridge on a glorious spring morning in good spirits.

The selection transpired that both skipper Ben Parkinson and third team stalwart back Sam Mason would end up playing out of position in the forwards with the latter taking the spot in the engine room alongside Elliot Stockton.

The game started with both sides testing out each other’s defensive qualities. Following an indiscretion at the breakdown by Tynedale, the Foresters opted to kick for the corner and the five man driven line out was used to good effect to put pressure on the Tynedale line. Another penalty ensued and this time the Foresters opted for the scrum. A good shove allowed scrum half Rory MacNab to dart over on the blind side. The conversion was missed (5-0).

Tynedale game back strongly and scored wide on the right from first phase scrum ball. The conversion was missed (5-5). Back on the attack came the Foresters but were repelled. An over thrown Tynedale lineout was turned over by Sam Mason who rumbled forward and a couple of quick passes put the defence into disarray and forced a penalty which was converted by Jack Johnson (8-5).

A brief period of stalemate was broken up by a great tackle/turnover by Adam Stockdale on his opposite number which was quickly recycled by MacNab who broke and offloaded in the tackle to Tom Mann who was on hand to race in under the posts. Johnson converted (15-5). Back came Tynedale who forced some soft attempted tackles and penalties and were rewarded with a converted try (15-12) and the game was in the balance at halftime.

The second half was nip and tuck with both defences on top. This ended up with a bit of kick tennis and following on from a dubious kick through wide right was gathered in by Johnson who broke, chipped ahead, regathered and fed the supporting winger Eddie Gill who carried on at pace to score under the posts. The conversion was succesful (22-12).
The final score was a converted penalty by Johnson (25-12).

This wasn’t to say that the Foresters rested on their laurels. They ended up on the offensive looking for the all important four try bonus point but to no avail. Chances came and went…. But the final whistle arrived first.

All in all it had been a great performance by all 17 lads in the squad who should be proud of their efforts.

Onwards to the final Yorkshire league fixture on Saturday at the Avenue.
