Selby 2nd XV 31-43 Wharfedale Dev XV

October 30th, 2017

A pleasant afternoon and a fantastic playing surface at Selby set the scene for an exciting game of rugby. Wharfedale started with promise with Captain Dan Benson leading strongly despite a Friday skin full and fly half Jack Johnson controlling affairs with the boot. Despite this, it was Selby who opened the scoring after the ball was kicked through and dotted down resulting in an attacking scrum. The ball was then sent wide to the left for the hosts to cross. On a blustery day the conversion was missed but they were 5-0 up.

Wharfedale came back and broke down the blind side with Jack Hirst in possession. The ball was passed to Johnson who’s evasive run took us deep into the home 22 where winger Charlie Graham was on hand to finish despite close attention from 2 defenders. The tricky conversion was missed. 5-5.

Selby responded straight away and caught ‘Dale half asleep and scored easily on the right flank. Once again the kick was missed. 10-5. Wharfedale then won a turnover at a scrum with Hirst and Tom Jackson making their presence felt in the front row. The ball was sent wide but a knock on by Adam Stockdale was quickly gathered by Selby and with one pass to their full back and he had the pace to go the distance. An excellent touchline conversion made the score 17-5.

Wharfedale finished off the scoring for the half after they had started to wake up and compete with more gusto, especially at the breakdown. A series of strong, hard carries and quick ruck ball put the hosts onto the back foot and yielded a penalty. Scrumhalf Eddie Gill took the tap quickly and powered over. Johnson added the extras from in front of the posts to reduce the deficit to 17-12.

Half Time

Selby started the second half in Wharfedale’s territory and attacked well. They opted to kick through but the ball was well fielded and dabbed down for a 22. Gill chose to try a short one, but it went straight into the hands of a Selby man but fortunately Jackson was on hand to force the turnover. The ball was then sent out to Graham on the right wing who set off on a mazy, jinking run and then offloaded out of the tackle to Stockdale over on the left, his fellow winger having enough space and pace to score. 17-19.

Selby then had a penalty awarded in front of the sticks but the wind sent the ball onto the post and then bouncing into the in goal area. Graham gathered the ball and set off on the attack. A series of excellent, direct, no-nonsense hard carries took the ball deep into the Selby half. Eventually Jackson Crashed over for the visitors to take the lead. 17-24.

Selby came straight back, cutting through the midfield defence with good running lines and a solid off-loading game. A converted try by the posts was the reward to tie the match up at 24 all.

Wharfedale responded well and came straight back into Selby territory. They were held up but from the resulting 5m scrum, a penalty was awarded but much to the frustration of the front row, a quick tap was taken which was then penalised for holding on and a penalty was awarded to Selby to clear their lines. Selby then added to the error count as they missed touch allowed the men in Green back on the attack which resulted in another 5m scrum. This time the pack successfully shunted over their counterparts and No.8 Matt Hall claimed the try. 24-29.

Johnson then finished off an individual try, beating several defenders with a jinking run and was on target with the conversion to take the scoreline to 24-36.

Wharfedale’s final score of the afternoon followed a break by Benson up the middle of the park. The ball was recycled and Gill broke from 9 to score. Johnson with the extras.24- 43.

Selby finished of the scoring with a try of their own, which was converted to take the final score to Selby 2nd XV 31, Wharfedale Dev XV 43.
