Redruth 13 Wharfedale 34
The Greens racked up five splendid tries in a dominant performance in Cornwall, recording their third successive bonus point victory. The result lifted them into 4th place in the league table.
A measure of Wharfedale’s achievement is that this was Redruth’s heaviest home defeat for many seasons: the search is still on for the last time the Recreation Ground fortress was breached so comprehensively.
Despite taking an early 6-0 lead through a drop-goal and penalty from their lively young stand-off Aaron Penburthy, Redruth rarely assumed any degree of control throughout the match. The Dalesmen bossed the forwards battle, and capitalised on the sound base thus provided with incisive running and first-class finishing.
A purple patch midway through the first half – 3 tries in barely 10 minutes – saw the visitors into the comfort zone at 19-6 at half-time. First full-back Luke Gray went over, following a fine break by centre Andy Hodgson. Another searing run by Hodgson set up Iain Dixon’s try, the winger’s scoring pass courtesy of centre Chris Malherbe. Then it was James Tincknell, on the opposite wing, rounding 3 defenders to score in the corner. Mark Bedworth added 2 conversions.
A massive drop-goal by Gray (46 mins) stretched the lead, before Tincknell finished off possibly the best team try of the season (52), inter-passing with Malherbe and prop Chris Steel at the climax of a surge of pressure on the home defence.
Leading try scorer Latu Maka’afi charged through a gap in the defence for the Greens’ final touch-down (61), converted by Bedworth. Redruth rallied to claim a consolation converted try from No 8 Mark Bright (71).
