Snowdon Scales New Heights in Foresters’ Win

Having finished so strongly last week at Doncaster Phoenix, the Foresters were keen to pick up in the same vein as they welcomed York 2nds to the Avenue. So it proved, as two tries from Ben Parkinson, who looked threatening whenever he hit the line from full-back, and one from Will Bell established a dominant lead in the first quarter of the game.

Will Bell and Mark Simpson impressed all afternoon in the centres, which allowed Ollie Whyte at fly-half the freedom to show his undoubted skill in what was his best match of the season.

The next score came from Oliver Snowdon, who had an outstanding game on the openside, claiming three tries and numerous turnovers at the breakdown. The only downside was his reticence in buying his jug. With the reliable Harris Catley missing only one conversion from these first four tries to make it 26-0, the good crowd was expecting the floodgates to be thrown open. It was to the credit of York that this was far from the case. Three of the next four tries were scored by the visitors as they claimed the majority of possession and exploited lapses in the home defence.

Wharfedale raised their game for the last quarter and four more tries followed. Debutant scrum-half, Rory McNabb, jinked over for the first to cap a very fine first senior outing. Snowdon then sped away for his third. The ball was being moved wide at every opportunity with slick hands from forwards and backs alike. The forwards also dominated the set piece, driving York off their own ball on a couple of occasions and pinching key line-outs. This was even the case when reduced to seven men in the scrum after Tom Wareing was shown a yellow card for an unintentional, dangerous tackle. It was fitting therefore that the last two tries went to prop, Joe Altham, and the evergreen Jim Bowers.

Sterner tests await but the side can take a lot of confidence from this performance.
