Selby 2nd XV 7- 15 Wharfedale Dev XV

September 19th, 2016
For their first encounter of the season the Development XV travelled over to Selby to take on their 2nd team in what historically has always been a tough place to travel to and brought mixed results in the past. The challenge wasn’t made any easier with a number of cry offs and unavailability as the cricket season drew to a close and, unbelievably, some people get married in the rugby season. Despite this, a decent team with a mixture of youth and experience set out to get the season off on a winning note. As expected, the game was nip and tuck from the outset with neither team able to take control of the proceedings. Wharfedale’s scrum was outstanding from the start but Selby had the better of early exchanges at the breakdown and with the lineout being an early season lottery set the game up to be very close. Wharfedale had a good chance to score first with a good break by Scott Rogers down the right wing sporting 1 green rugby sock and 1 white ankle sock (at least the colours were right). Unfortunately the chance was squandered and the scores remained at 0-0. Selby then had a gilt-edged chance to take the lead after a penalty for offside was given away right in front of the post. Surprisingly the kick was missed and we were still at 0-0. Ben Parkinson then came off for a rest after he sustained a knock to the knee, so shorter brother Jake took over in the centre with George Vyvyan coming on into the pack. This must have been the catalyst needed, as from a lineout, the ball was spun wide (missing Jake) to Rogers who made good yards again down the wing before giving the scoring pass inside to Harris Catley supporting from the other wing. Unfortunately he missed the conversion but we were 5-0 to the good. With the visitors now taking a grip on the game, young fly half Olly Whyte put a neat chip through to the corner for the back line to chase, the pressure resulted in a 5m scrum with a green put in. Scrum confidence was high with the Cracoe front row of Tom & Joe Jackson (aka Sausage & Party Sausage) with Tom Carlisle at hooker having a great day at the set piece. Unfortunately, fellow Cracoe dweller, Dan ‘butter fingers’ Benson wasn’t in his new role at No.8 and the chance was fluffed. No need to worry though as Selby were then shoved off their own put in and Simon Hargreaves dotted down the ball as it spilled though into the green pack. 10-0. Selby were then offered another offside penalty chance in front of the sticks, but again pushed the ball wide. Half Time The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with 25 minutes played before another score was recorded. Young flanker Olly Snowden popped up in the centre and passed to full back Sam Mason who dotted down to take the score to 15-0. Then, to keep our vegetarian friends happy, Sausage was substituted for Cabbage to add some weight and experience (but not too many teeth) to the set-piece and hopefully continue scrum dominance, which it did. As the game drew to a close, a fourth try and a bonus point would have been nice but the last score was by Selby, which was touched down out to the left and then after two earlier misses from easier positions, their kicker slotted over the conversion with aplomb.
