Foresters 20 – 17 Newcastle University

September 17th, 2016
Nearly 200 people turned out on a balmy September evening to watch a thrilling game of rugby. The students looked like a strong outfit and so it proved in the early exchanges when they ran in two unconverted tries to lead by 10 points. The Foresters started to gain a foothold in the game and got on the scoreboard thanks to a long range penalty kick from Joe Metcalf. A converted try from Newcastle re-established a bit of distance in the scoreline but it was to be the visitor`s last score. Wharfedale grew and grew and closed the gap with a well taken try in the corner by Otto Mallileu-Black to make the score 8 - 17 at halftime. The second half was again well contested and Dale closed the gap to 4 points, after a clean catch and drive from the line out allowed Rhys Davies to cross for an unconverted try. Dale took the lead after good movement from forwards and backs took the ball into the student’s 22. A half break followed from Will Bell who fed Mark Simpson. A side-step took Simpson neatly past the remaining defender to touch down under the posts. Will Bell slotted the extras. Newcastle finished strongly but the Green line held out with brave defence to win the game. There were some outstanding performances from the Foresters especially the front row with a very strong display of the art of propping from Matt Close! The tackling was strong throughout and it was a joy to see Jake Parkinson leading the way and then getting over to win the ball for a penalty. Will Bell had a big influence on the tempo of the game when he came on at stand off. Wharfedale team: - 15. Sam Mason 14. Otto Mallileu-Black 13. Ralph Wellock 12. Simon Crabtree 11.
