Wharfedale Development XV 72 – 3 Huddersfield YMCA 2nd XV

April 11th, 2016
On a pleasant spring afternoon with a healthy crowd, boosted by Bulloughs sponsorship generosity, watching both ourselves and the Rams in their cup encounter, the Devs set about their last league encounter of the season in determined fashion. A powerful run by Captain Sam Mason playing in the centre resulted in the first scoring opportunity as the visitors were penalised at the ensuing breakdown. Morgan Davies took the three points from in front of the posts. 3-0. This was soon followed by the first try of the match as Maxime Labasse chipped ahead and had the pace to beat the defenders to the touch down. 8-0. (Or 12-0 as Tom Carlisle thought when altering the scoreboard, much to the amusement of the supporters). YMCA then attempted to clear their lines but the ball was well fielded by Davies who carted it back at the defence. Fly Half Beer then fed the ball to Mason who crossed from close quarters to take the tally to 13-0. This was followed by a typical Sam Smith try. The powerful winger beat 2 men and had the space to score behind the posts. Conversion by Catley, on for the injured Beer who had popped his shoulder and was now busily attacking a pork pie on the side-lines. 20-0. Smith then collected his second after a neat inside pass from Labasse and the winger cut a good line to charge to the line. Catley again converting. 27-0. No.8 Tom Wareing, then secured an excellent turnover penalty at the breakdown. A quick tap was taken, the ball was fed to Labasse, who unleashed Smith for his hat trick, once again converted by Catley. This then prompted the usual ‘oooh I’ve got a tight hamstring’ complaints from the ‘athletic winger’. 34-0. The forwards then got in on the act when the referee awarded a penalty try after sustained scrummage pressure and infringements from the visitors. Catley added the simple extras. 41-0. YMCA, to their credit then had a good period of attacking play and where the home side eventually gave a penalty away in kickable range, which was duly taken to get them on the scoreboard. 41-3. Young winger Otto Mallalieu-Black then got his name on the score sheet with the next two tries, firstly using his pace to run clear of the defence, Catley converting, 48-3, then following great hands by the back line to put him with one man to beat, which he did to take the score to 55-3 with Catleys extras. Mallalieu-Black was then the creator as a jinking run took the play to a few yards short of the try line. Replacement No.8 Dan Benson was on hand to crash over. 60-3. Next was a great individual effort from scrum half Lawn. He broke from a ruck on half way and had the pace to make it the full distance to the whitewash to take the score to 65-3. Finally, Labasse again showed his pace to get on the end of a kick through to take the score to 72-3. Match Won, League Won, Excellent job lads, now let’s take on the cup. Team: - 1. Matty Close 2.
