Leeds Medics 2nd XV 5 – 82 Wharfedale Development XV

October 26th, 2015
The Development team were on the road this week to face Leeds Medics & Dentists at the Weetwood sports fields on the outskirts of Leeds. Despite earlier rain, the weather was excellent and the playing surface possibly one of the best around. Wharfedale started well and were soon on the score sheet with Matt Wareing powering over under the posts to finish off a fantastic phase of play in which nearly the whole team handled the ball. Harris Catley added the extras, 0-7. Excellent work at the breakdown forced a turnover which Fly Half Michael Beer chipped ahead with Ben Parkinson chasing after and pressured the home sides winger into another turnover which Harry Balderson profited from, running in unopposed, 0-14. The next score came after a break down the left flank by Catley who chipped ahead and more pressure from supporting players forced errors from the Medics. At the resulting scrum, M Wareing picked from the base, offloaded to James Ardron who maintained the momentum then offloaded to Andrew Bode who crashed over. Excellent conversion by Catley from wide out put the away side 21 points up. Wharfedale were really playing with confidence and scoring quite freely through excellent play as the Medics were no weak outfit. A powerful midfield scrum led by the Close Brothers and Thomas Walker took a ball against the head, M Wareing picked up from the base and fed the backline out to Catley who evaded two defenders to score in the corner. Another excellent conversion, 0-28. Wharfedale then relaxed a little and a few errors started creeping in and penalties were given away, The Medics capitalised with a try from a tap penalty, 5-28. Wharfedale soon found their focus again and a quick line out by Tom Wareing set up the next score. He carried the ball strongly up field, supported by Ben Parkinson and Matty Close, quickly recycled ball was then fed back out to Parkinson to score, Catley again converting, 5-35. The half was rounded off by a mid-field break by Parkinson, who fed the supporting Nick Taylor. The Full Back didn’t quite have the legs to score himself but offloaded to Harry Croft to score, 5-42. Half Time The first score of the second half was created by a break by Sam Lockwood, who offloaded to Ben Rymer, who, quite surprisingly had the legs to get near to the line and then, possibly more surprising, the reach to dab the ball down on the white wash! Another excellent conversion by Catley, 5-49. Nick Taylor scored next after bursting through the tiring defense, another Catley conversion. 5-56. Then Ian Close collected a pass from the floor from Bode to crash over. Catley then missed his first kick of the afternoon (but it did hit the post). 5-61. Taylor then uncharacteristically passed a ball which resulted in Crofts second try. Taylor added the extras to take the score to 5-68. Croft then completed his hat-trick, beating several tired defenders. Balderson taking kicking responsibility this time, 5-75. The game and the scoring were completed by Tom Wareing, who scythed through midfield to score under the posts then added the extras himself.
