Foresters 33 Leeds Met Univ 31

October 12th, 2014
In what has become a traditional opener to the season, Tommy McGee brought his successful university side to the Avenue to play a Foresters team which itself has got its season off to a flying start. Last season the Greens were no match for the well-drilled students, but this time was different: within ten minutes centre Will Davidson had scored two tries, both converted by James Druce, who by half-time had added a penalty goal to make the score 17-5; the conversion of a Met try under the posts had been bizarrely missed, a mistake which would in the end cost the visitors dear. That the Foresters were still in the game at all was to their credit: as early as the 15th minute back-rower Tom Baines had been controversially red-carded on the word of a touch judge following a touchline scuffle from which his adversary saw yellow. (It is very likely that Wharfedale will be lodging an appeal). Added to that was the fact that the students had arrived with a playing squad of no fewer than 37, so it could be foreseen that the second half would test the lungs and discipline of the short-handed Foresters to the limit. And so it turned out, with Leeds Met eventually running in four tries in quick succession, but not before Jim Meehan had notched a try for the Greens. With the clock running down, the Foresters made increasingly rare incursions into the visitor’s danger area, two of those occasions resulting in penalties, coolly converted by Robbie Davidson, taking over the kicking duties from James Druce whose contribution had amounted to two penalties and thee conversions.
