An Evening With The President

September 11th, 2017

And what a terrific evening it was! Friday 25 August witnessed perhaps the greatest gathering of rugby talent at Wharfedale since John Lawn, Charlie Vyvyan and Hedley Verity were in their pomp, as the club hosted “An Evening with the President”, a tribute to John Spencer, now entering his 40th year as President of the club and his first as President of the RFU – having just returned from New Zealand where he was manager of the British and Irish Lions who came so close to toppling the All Blacks. Superbly organised by Amanda Spencer, Amelia Vyvyan, Claire and Felicity Gains and Sarah Benson, this black tie dinner brought together such luminaries of the game as David Duckham, Derek Quinnell, Andy Irvine, chairman of World Rugby Bill Beaumont, Sir Ian McGeechan, Chairman of European Club Rugby Simon Halliday and CEO of the RFU Ian Ritchie plus 400 guests including Welcome to Yorkshire’s Sir Gary Verity.

The Organisers

A Pride of Lions

Hosted expertly and humorously by BBC presenters Ian Robertson and John Inverdale, the evening showed the huge respect and regard in which John is viewed in the rugby world, and also the warmth of the affection which so many have for Wharfedale. Although John was rightly the focus of the evening, perhaps the most moving moment was Simon Halliday’s speech about his involvement with Cardiac Risk in the Young. The evening raised around an amazing £15,000 for this very worthwhile charity.
