Match Preview – Sheffield Tigers v Wharfedale

March 20th, 2019 Comments off

After the postponement, for the second time, of last Saturday’s fixture against Stourbridge the Green Machine take to the M1 once again and head to South Yorkshire to go big game hunting of the Sheffield Tigers variety at Dore Moor.

Still searching for the single point that will ensure National 2 North survival for another season, Wharfedale take on a Tigers side with problems of their own regarding league status. A fifteen point cushion above the sides in the bottom three should prove sufficient but with the personnel available they will be looking on the season to date as somewhat of an under achievement.

Boasting a back three that is the envy of most sides in the table, as the Greens can testify from previous encounters including the fixture at the Avenue back in November, Sheffield Tigers are looking to complete a league double. Their 25 games have produced just 8 wins and a draw to give a total of 53 points. The 35-26 victory in the first meeting between the sides showed how resolute the men from Dore Moor can be, coming back from a 19 point deficit early on. The previous five matches between the sides show Wharfedale having a solitary victory to Tigers four wins.

With the loss of last weekend’s game, now arranged for Easter Saturday 20th April, Wharfedale have a total of four out of their last five games to be played on home soil.

Kick off this coming Saturday is at 3.00pm and the Tigers address is Dore Moor, Hathersage Road, Sheffield S17 3AB.

200 Club Winners – Jan to March 2019

March 16th, 2019 Comments off

“The Floodlights were on but they didn’t give off much heat”

Many thanks to those hardly souls across in the ‘Shed’ who huddled together like Emperor penguins to brave the bitterly cold conditions whilst watching the recent match against Chester. Especially those of you who gingerly removed a glove or mitten to assist with picking out of the ten winning numbers for the 200 Club draw. We even attracted 3 new members to the Club in the process – so apart from the weather and the scoreline it wasn’t too bad a day!

Carol Brown

March 15th, 2019 Comments off

We are very sorry to have to announce that Carol slipped away peacefully at 04:00 this morning at home in the arms of her family. She had suffered a rare and aggressive form of cancer but at no stage did she experience pain.

A constant presence at the club, Carol was at one time Chairman of the Ladies’ Committee, and (even more importantly!) mended and even rebuilt the playing shirts of all the teams over a period of 30 years. She will be greatly missed and we send our condolences to the family. She leaves behind as well as her husband Gordon, their daughters Victoria and Suzie, their son Fraser and their grandchildren Lucy and Scott.

Carol’s cremation will be on Wednesday 27 March at 10:50 at the Skipton Crematorium, followed by a knees-up at the rugby club. All her friends are invited to attend. Carol’s request is that sombre colours are NOT to be worn.
